It's the UE Red Warriors vs the DLSU Green Archers 4pm today in the 2014 Filoil Preseason Cup at the San Juan Arena! Could this be a UAAP Finals Preview? It's the time for our rookie watch as Moustaph Arafat and Renz Palma will strut their stuff against the ballers from Taft! Bomba UE, Igma Kadima!

Ngayong si Pumaren na ang coach natin makikita natin na mas scientific, methodological and more on team plays ang warriors ngayon.

And with Dindo as his assistant, sigurado kundisyon na kundisyon ang Warriors! Grabe magtrain to!

Ang testament nito eh yung 14-0 run natin nung 2007! The Warriors were in perfect shape! They can run the daunted pumaren press the whole game pero walang nagccramps kahit isa samantalang sa lahat ng kalaban natin lagi may nagccramps kaliwat kanan sa pagod sa kakatakbo against sa UE!

New UE coach Derrick Pumaren benches Charles Mammie for missing practice

From: Reuben TerradoApril 26, 2014, 09:42 pm

CHARLES Mammie missed the Filoil Premier Cup preseason match of University of the East against La Salle on Saturday after being meted
with a disciplinary action by the Red Warriors’ coaching staff.

Coach Derrick Pumaren said the Sierra Leonean center didn’t attend the team’s practice early Saturday morning prior to its debut against
the Green Archers, leaving the newly-appointed mentor with no choice but to bench him.

“It’s a coach’s decision,” Pumaren said after the game, which the Warriors lost. “He didn’t show up for practice this morning so I have
to draw the line.”

“The whole team practiced this morning and he didn’t practice today. I had to make a decision. I think it’s unfair for the other guys who
attended practice,” said Pumaren.

Previously, Mammie had been benched by Pumaren’s predecessor Boycie Zamar once during a PCCL game last year due to what he said
was an "attitude problem."

“Mabuti na ang Rufina Patis, huwag lang toyo,” said Zamar, using a local lingo for a player that is hard to deal with.

Chris Javier is the new Noble.

Dami pa turnovers and pilit na tira.

RR De Leon was trigger happy sa 3s. Mark Olayon was off to a good start.

Bong Galanza provided the needed points when the Warriors need it the most.

Renz Palma is also worth the hype.

It was a good bad game. Almost 3 weeks of preparations, it was a good loss I must say.

Chris Javier did not improve i must say. Ganun pa din. same old same old.

'One import per team' policy will be unfair to UAAP players who have served residency, says UE coach Pumaren

From: Reuben TerradoApril 27, 2014, 06:13 pm

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

UNIVERSITY of the East coach Derrick Pumaren hopes the UAAP will rethink the league’s new rule limiting foreign players to just one per team.

Pumaren said the imposition of the rule this coming Season 77 will greatly affect imports including those in the Red Warriors’ roster who are already
eligible to play this season.

Quoting informed sources, Spin.ph has reported that the league is set to allow only one import (from two) per team starting in the new season
that will open this July.

As it is, Cameroonian swingman Moustapha Arafat will be eligible to play for the Warriors this year. But with UE still having Sierra Leonean
veteran center Charles Mammie in its roster, the team will have to choose who between Arafat and Mammie to include in the lineup.

Pumaren finds the new rule unfair especially for Arafat, who already underwent two-year residency set for foreign athletes.

“Like for Arafat, he already served his two-year residency tapos hindi siya puwedeng maglaro. Medyo mahirap para sa bata,” said Pumaren,
who was a consultant of the Hong Kong national basketball team prior to joining the Recto-based squad.

“Let’s not talk about the investment of UE. Just talk about him as person, and as a human being. He served his two years, he is ready to play,
then all of a sudden, hindi makakalaro. That’s my opinion,” said Pumaren.

Arafat gave UE fans a reason to be excited for the coming season, as he scored 12 points in his Filoil Premier Cup preseason debut,
which he capped with an alley-oop dunk against UAAP champion La Salle.

Pumaren, however, made it clear he will respect whatever decision the UAAP will make on the matter.

“But hopefully, it’s going to be a change of heart. For the sake of Arafat and whoever player na nag-serve na ng two years na
supposedly makakalaro na. I feel for the guy. Okay lang ‘yung bagong dating, pero ‘yung ready to play, parang masakit putting myself
into their position,” said Pumaren.

Once the new rule becomes official, Pumaren said he will have a tough decision choosing between the imposing Mammie and the athletic Arafat.

“I’ll wait for the last day of submission of the provisional lineup to decide, if ever may rule change,” said Pumaren.

Unfair talaga yan!

What's up with the haste?

The UAAP Board fast-tracking this new policy? Why?

Tapos sila naisip lang nila this month bigla implement kaagad nila. Kalokohan.

Looking at the La Salle-UE Filoil match
by rick olivares

It’s just the first match of the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup for La Salle and the University of the East that ended with a 69-62 win for the former. But after 40 minutes, it is obvious that their respective title campaigns will come down to what could be taken away from the match.

UE Red Warriors
Roi Sumang and Moustaph Arafat will be like Mike Conley and Greg Oden for Ohio State University – an incredible one-two punch to lead their team. But that one-two punch becomes only huge if the other starters and bench produce.

Sumang, the reigning pound-for-pound king of college basketball (Mark Cruz does hive him a run for that title tho Sumang is ahead ever so slightly) can still light up the scoreboard but UE needs to surround him with talent. A player like Sumang doesn’t come too often. He’s like Paul Lee, a human dynamo, and a scoring machine if you will. But Michael Jordan for all his prodigious scoring efforts needed Scottie Pippen, Ho Grant, Dennis Rodman and Toni Kukoc.

Moustaph Arafat is a fun player to watch. I love how he kept this poker face in going about his game. Very much like former NU Bulldog Jean Mbe. His block of Arnold Van Opstal’s two-handed stuff attempt was awesome. And to think that he came from the 15-foot line to help out on defense. And that alley-oop from Sumang for a dunk… man. I can watch that over and over again.

UE will have that quick strike capability like they did when they had Lee and Elmer Espiritu. And Arafat has a silky smooth medium range jumper just like NU’s Alfred Aroga.

But they will need strong inside play. Paging Chris Javier. This is where you have to make a stand and show what kind of player you are. And Ivan Hernandez has to get out of his Robocop mode and rebound.

And speaking of inside presence, in one moment, Derrick Pumaren inherited one of Boycie Zamar’s problems – Charles Mammie. The Sierra Leone native did not practice and as a result didn’t play. With the UAAP threatening to only allow one foreign player in the line-up he just might not be on the team.

As for the other guys, if Bong Gallanza can play the fireman’s role the way Gene Belleza did two years ago for UE that will help. He has to be aggressive in attacking that basket rather than relying on kickouts.

This team cannot keep throwing up three-point shots because their average hovers around 20-30% which isn’t very good. Sumang can carry the team for stretches but opposing teams will try to confound him; force him to give up that ball and put taller and athletic players in front of him. You take away that drive, he’ll just be an outside shooter. It falls to Gino Jumao-as to help out in this regard. He has to be aggressive in attacking and creating. That will make life easier for guys like Arafat, Javier, and Hernandez.

Dan Alberto as back-up point guard has to play better. But it will be tough for him as UE is thin. They’ve got so many new guys. They were tabbed for five 24-second shot clock violations but that wasn’t entirely because La Salle’s defense was great; UE just kept passing the rock around because no one wanted to take the shot. Again I know it’s the pre-season and they will learn but it is painfully obvious on what they need to achieve.

La Salle Green Archers
In a pre-game interview (and it became very apparent at the end of this game), junior forward Jeron Teng nailed it as sweet as a game-winning jumper – the green and white now have the confidence to close out games.

Harried by a late UE run, La Salle shut down their opponent with strong play. There was that ball going out of bounds but was saved by Yutien Andrada to Jeron Teng for an undergoal stab. There was that missed corner three by Almond Vosotros that fell into Arnold Van Opstal’s hands for a bucket (they practice that play joked Vosotros). And speaking of Vosotros – there are players who you if you are an opponent do not want to see get hot from the outside. Vosotros, like UST’s Kevin Ferrer and UE’s Sumang are the other two. Golden hands is the term. But La Salle has two because there’s Matt Salem. I guess, UE forgot all about him too and he made them pay for their disrespect.

Vosotros, as usual, was steady in the clutch. Hence, this win.

You have to like the depth and talent of this team. They’ve got the height, defense, speed, shooting, and the halfcourt and fastbreaking style down pat (not in that order mind you).

There were concerns about their playmaking… but with Thomas Torres, Kib Montalbo, and Terrence Mustre, they are okay. Vosotros can even run the point.

Prince Rivero even as a rookie showed what he can do. He isn’t afraid to drive and showed good basketball IQ. I’ve seen him play even in high school all the way to the NBTC All-Star Game and I thought to myself, second coming of Rafa Dinglasan (hey, buddy) but with better offense. That means energy, hustle and smarts.

Norbert looked lost much like he did for stretches in last season. But never discount this guy.

Outside Rivero, the other newbie who should some fight in him was Mustre. He committed some errors but you could see the determination on his face to do something positive. You have to appreciate that. Abu Tratter was not his usual self where he would drive hard to the basket (when playing for La Salle’s Team B). I thought he was coasting or maybe even feeling his way around. We’ve seen Julian Sargent play in last pre-season and well, there’s an upside maybe somewhere.

How do you beat this team that has the makings of a super team? You have to not match them but take it to them. You need to play as a team because La Salle is deep and can hurt you in so many ways.

Even in only the pre-season, the UAAP has been served notice that the Green Archers mean business about annexing a back-to-back crown.

The Red Warriors lose to a veteran-laden Altas, 78-83.

This preseason tournament will serve as one good conditioning venue for the team.

This will give them the very much needed preparation for the upcoming UAAP Wars.

Perpetual Help stays unscathed, keeps defending champion UE winless

UNIVERSITY of Perpetual Help romped to its third straight victory and kept defending champion University of the East winless in the 2014 FilOil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup on Monday at The Arena in San Juan.

Reigning NCAA Rookie of the Year Juneric Baloria came up with 28 points as the Altas won, 83-78, over the Red Warriors.

Justine Alano added 25 and Harold Arboleda chipped in 20, including five triples, for the Altas, who are unbeaten in three games and are alone on top in Group A.

“Sinasabi kasi ko walang star sa team,” said Perpetual Help coach Aric del Rosario. “Pare-pareho ang score namin, kalat-kalat, lahat gumagawa kaya maganda ang takbo ng team.”

Alano noted they are motivated to work hard, especially against teams reinforced by foreign players.

“Lahat kasi kami gusto manalo, walang petiks sa amin at motivation namin na all-Filipino kami, wala kaming import,” said Alano.

Roy Sumang finished with 16 points, Pedrito Galanza added 15, Leonean import Charles Mammie chipped in 13 and Cameroonian reinforcement Moustapha Arafat contributed 10 for UE.

It was the second loss in two outings for the Red Warriors, who fell to the La Salle Green Archers, 62-69, in their opening game.

The scores:

UPHSD 83 - Baloria 28, Allano 26, Arboleda 20, Thompson 8, Dagangon 1, Gallardo 0, Dizon 0,, Sadiwa 0, Oliveria 0, Jolangcob 0, Bantayan 0, Cabiltes 0

UE 78 - Sumang 16, Galanza 15, Mammie 13, Arafat 10, Javier 8, Caparida 6, Palma 4, Charcos 4, Jumao-as 2, Varilla 0, Hernandez 0, De Leon 0

Quarterscores: 17-17; 34-36; 59-58; 83-78.
