Derrick Pumaren officially takes over as head coach of UE Red Warriors

DERRICK Pumaren officially took over as head coach of the University of the East Red Warriors on Thursday and has started his search for members of his coaching staff.

Pumaren’s younger brother Dindo, head tactician of the Warriors from 2003 to 2008, will be his top lieutenant but the two are now looking for more assistant coaches to join the rejigged staff.

Spin.ph earlier reported that Derrick Pumaren was the most logical choice for UE, given that he is an alumnus and can work full-time - conditions the school laid out after announcing the firing of Boycie Zamar.

However, the search became complicated when some backers of the team from Lucio Tan's family pushed for other options who may not necessarily work fulltime for the position, sources said.

Consequently, the scheduled announcement of the new coach was delayed by a week.

Former Letran coach Louie Alas was also considered for the post but he is also a concurrent assistant coach of Alaska in the PBA. He was also interviewed for the job by Mike Tan, son of the school owner.

Alas, who won NCAA titles for Letran, also expressed interest in the job.

But in the end, the school went with Derrick Pumaren, a veteran coach who has won two championships in the PBA with Swift and who UE officials described as a "true Red Warrior."

A former member of the UE Pages champion team, Pumaren, son of UE great Pilo and older brother of Air21 coach Franz, also played two years with the Red Warriors.

He is known in basketball circles as 'Manong' Derrick, since he was the eldest among the Pumaren brothers.

However, Derrick has not held a coaching position since his last PBA post with Talk 'N Text in 2008, settling mostly for consultancy jobs.

Derrick Pumaren replaces Boycie Zamar as UE Red Warriors head coach

MANILA, Philippines - UE head coach Boycie Zamar signals to his players during the matchup between the University of the East (UE) Red Warriors and the De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers for the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 76 held at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, south of Manila on 20 July 2013. CxS College Hoops Slideshows - MANILA, Philippines - UE head coach Boycie Zamar signals to his players during the matchup between the University of the East (UE) Red Warriors and the De La Salle University …more

Sticking to its principle of tapping a homegrown head coach, University of the East selected former Red Warrior Derrick Pumaren to call the shots for its men's basketball team in lieu of the sacked Boycie Zamar.

A member of UE's back-to-back championship teams in 1978 and 1979 in the UAAP men's cage wars, Pumaren has already hit the ground running Thursday by conducting the Red Warriors practice at the Tanduay gym in Manila along with his younger brother Dindo who will serve as his first assistant coach.

Derrick Pumaren's appointment ended nearly two weeks of guessing game since Red Warriors team management gave Zamar and his coaching staff the pink slip last March 28.

Yahoo Philippines previously reported former Letran coach Louie Alas had the inside track for the job and even "agreed in principle" to handle the Red Warriors after sitting down with Michael Tan, a son of business tycoon and top UE backer Lucio Tan.

However, a group of "academicians" argued Alas has a concurrent position as an assitant coach to the Alaska Aces in the pro league, something that runs against the school's stand of tapping "someone who will handle the team on full time."

That somehow paved the way for the entry of Pumaren, a former national team coach who also had several coaching forays in the pro league, the last with Talk 'N Text in 2008.

He also handled the De La Salle Green Archers from the late 80s to early 90s and even served as consultant for different clubs in local and foreign scene.

With close to three months left before UE hosts UAAP Season 77, Pumaren is racing against time to instill his system to a squad led by guard Roi Sumang and hulking African import Charles Mammie.

Dindo Pumaren, Noynoy Falcasantos to join Derrick Pumaren's Coaching Staff

by Naveen Ganglani

Manila – Former UAAP head coach Dindo Pumaren and PBA player Noynoy Falcasantos will join newly-appointed University of the East Red Warriors head coach Derrick Pumaren’s coaching staff in the upcoming season of the UAAP.
The younger Pumaren and Falcasantos will serve as Derrick’s main assistant coaches, a source close to the situation revealed to InboundPass.com earlier today. Furthermore, UE management is looking at more options to fill out other open assistant coaching slots.
“Based on what I know, Manong Derrick will be the head coach. Dindo [Pumaren] and Noynoy Falcasantos will be the assistant coaches,” the source said.
Dindo served as UE’s men’s basketball head coach from 2003-2008, wherein he led the Recto-based club to the finals in 2007, following a 14-0 elimination round campaign. Prior to Derrick’s hiring, released reports revealed that Dindo, along with former collegiate basketball coaches Louie Alas and Lawrence Chiongson, were being considered for the UE head coaching gig.
Falcasantos, a Zamboanga City native, played forward for Barangay Ginebra in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) from 2000-2004.
The source also cited that the new coaches are in the process of getting to know the players in the UE roster, which includes Roi Sumang and Charles Mammie.
“They still need to get to know the team better,” mentioned the source, who also said that the presence of the three coaches may lead to the return of Red Warriors standout Chris Javier.
“They’re entry will perhaps bring the return of Javier,” he said.
Javier, a big man who plays effective on both ends of the floor, was reported to have left the UE men’s basketball team due to a variety of reasons involving both sides. With him in tow for Season 77, UE will become one of the most lethal teams in the league.

DLSU, Letran, UV size up ‘Group of Death’ in Filoil cagefest

MANILA, Philippines – With a shorter tournament and only the top two teams of each bracket along with the two best third placers (decided by quotient) advancing to the quarterfinals, every school in Group A of the 2014 Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup will have that feel of an important game.

Group A is a virtual “Group of Death” with defending Filoil champion University of the East bracketed along with UAAP and PCCL champion De La Salle, NCAA champion San Beda College, NCAA first-runners-up Letran, and CESAFI champion University of Visayas along with league-mates Southwestern University and the University of San Carlos.

“It’s definitely a tough group and my first reaction was, ‘paano kami napunta diyan? Lahat ng tough teams nandyan.’ But we will take the positives from this and learn from it,” admitted La Salle head coach Juno Sauler.

The Green Archers will be fielding an 18-man line-up that will feature rookies Abu Tratter, Julian Sargent, Prince Rivero and Renzo Subido among others.

“We will use this to discover our strengths and weaknesses. Hopefully, we will learn from them in time for the UAAP,” added DLSU team manager Raffy Villavicencio.

“I agree, it’s tough group,” confirmed second-year Letran coach Carlos Garcia. “More so we do not have a replacement for (6’8” center and NCAA Season 89 Most Valuable Player) Raymond Almazan who is now in the PBA. But we are looking at it for exposure and to develop team chemistry.”

Sportshub ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1

Without Almazan, Letran shifts to its attention to the speedy and high-scoring backcourt of Mark Cruz and Rey Nambatac.

UV Lancers head coach and former pro player Donbel Belano believes that going up against some of the best teams in Manila let alone the country will help his Green Lancers in defending their CESAFI crown.

“You will learn a lot more from playing the top teams than teams na kayang kaya mo,” said Belano. “The exposure will be of valuable help to us.”

Filoil’s “Group of Death” opens their play on Saturday, April 26, at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan when UE takes on Letran at 2 p.m. while La Salle and San Beda clash at 4 p.m. in a replay of the PCCL Finals.

Just my observation- every time na title contender ang UE laging may namamatay na UE Official at lagi nagaganap before the UAAP Season. UE asst coach Gido Babilonia in January 2007 (nag 14-0 tayo nun), PO Domingo June 26, 2008 (we were in the final 4 that year), UE UAAP Board Rep Brent Perez July 2009 (we were one win away from a UAAP title), and now Mr. Tanchangco (this year we are considered to be one of the title contenders).

Warriors doing fine despite short time adjusting to new coach Pumaren, says UE star Roy Sumang

From: Reuben TerradoApril 19, 2014, 02:25 pm

UNIVERSITY of the East star Roi Sumang believes the Red Warriors will be fine even as they go into a short transition period following the recent shake up in the team’s coaching staff.

The Warriors try to stay as one of the Final Four contenders in Season 77 of the UAAP under new coach Derek Pumaren.

The veteran coach, a former UE cager himself, replaced Boycie Zamar, who handled the team for more than a season.

The Warriors finished with an even 7-7 record last season under Zamar and failed to make it to the semis.

The appointment of Pumaren came just months after the UAAP season ended and exactly 13 days before the start of the Filoil preseason tournament.

Following his hiring, Pumaren said time will definitely be not on the side of the Warriors as they fast track their preparations for Season 77.

Sumang though doesn’t see any problem lurking for the team under Pumaren’s watch.

While he felt sad about Zamar being relieved, Sumang expressed support to Pumaren as he sees the Red Warriors are capable of getting through the transition period.

“Sobrang biglaan. Wala kaming idea. Malungkot lahat,” related Sumang to Spin.ph, when asked the feeling of the team after Zamar was replaced.

“Sayang lang talaga na nawala si coach Boycie pero okay lang. Aabot kami sa gustong mangyari ni coach Derek. Team na team na rin naman kami,” he said.

Sumang said Pumaren is giving the team a no-nonsense approach, being more focused on the defensive side of the game in his first week handling the Warriors.

“Strikto siya sa practice at saka puro defense ang practice namin ngayon,” said Sumang.

UE will open its Filoil campaign on April 26 against UAAP champion De La Salle.

Red Warriors to defend Filoil crown

ABS-CBNnews.com
Posted at 04/20/2014 3:55 PM | Updated as of 04/20/2014 3:55 PM
MANILA, Philippines – When the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup tips off this coming Wednesday at the San Juan Arena, the University of the East (UE) Red Warriors
will open the collegiate basketball season in an unfamiliar role – that of defending champions.

The Red Warriors know that a pre-season title does not guarantee a UAAP championship. In the seven previous stagings, only two summer champions have gone on
to win their respective collegiate league title – La Salle in 2007 and Ateneo in 2011.

Furthermore, they will be parading a new head coach in Derek Pumaren, their fourth head coach in the last four seasons.

They will also be without former mainstays Adrian Santos, Ralf Olivares, JM Noble and Jai Flores, who have all used up their playing years.

Pumaren will count on fourth-year point guard and scoring sensation Roi Sumang, guard Gino Jumao-as and center Charles Mammie to lead their campaign.

Also at stake for UE – aside from defending their title – is moving one step closer to bringing home the Eduardo Cojuangco Jr. Perpetual Trophy, which goes to the first
college team to win three consecutive Filoil crowns.

Last summer was UE’s second pre-season title after having also won in 2008.

The pre-season collegiate basketball tournament is sponsored by Flying V, Filoil, Total, Hanes, San Miguel Corporation, Starmobile, Timex, Silverworks, Gatorade, LGR and in part by Meralco, BDO, Reyes Barbecue, Douwe Egberts, Gerry’s Grill, Brothers Burger, Molten, Bayo, Oxycan, BPI, PBCom, San Marino, Red Logo, and Bacchus Energy Drink.

Source: UAAP set to restrict number of foreign players to only one per school

From: Reuben TerradoApril 23, 2014, 06:00 pm

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

THE UAAP is set to restrict its eight member schools to only one foreign student-player per season among a raft of changes it plans to implement this year, according to a Spin.ph source.

A person with knowledge of the matter but refused to be named said the league has agreed in principle to limit the allowable number of foreign players in each school team from two to one.

The source said the new rule could be in effect as early as the upcoming Season 77.

The new ruling replaces the previous limit of two foreign students in the lineup of each. The two, however, can only play one at a time.

The past few years have seen a rise in the number of foreign players, most notably from Africa, seeing action in the UAAP particularly in men’s basketball event.

At present, all eight member schools have an African basketball player either in their UAAP roster or still taking up residency.

Ironically, one school that could be affected should the new rule be in place this year is University of the East, host of the upcoming season.

The Red Warriors are set to parade Cameroonian big man Moustaph Arafat to join Sierra Leonean veteran Charles Mammie for Season 77. But if the new rule takes effect, the host school will be left with no choice but to select between Mammie and Arafat.

The NCAA, for its part, has banned the recruitment of foreign players starting in the year 2015.
