UE on the defensive over UniGames final no-show

By Reuben Terrado
October 29, 2012, 05:23 pm

UNIVERSITY of the East on Monday defended its decision to skip the finals of the University Games, saying it had to make the difficult choice between playing the championship game in Bacolod or making it to Taipei in time for the 4th Asian University Men’s Basketball Championship.

In the end, the Red Warriors chose to play for flag and country.

“We had to make a decision and we chose the AUBC,” UE team manager Jess Tanchanco told Spin.ph. “We are representing the Philippines (in Taipei) and we are the only Southeast Asian country. It is a big tournament where Hong Kong, China, Mongolia, and Taiwan are competing.”

The Warriors skipped the University Games men’s basketball championship game against National University on Sunday in Bacolod City, handing the Bulldogs the title by forfeiture.

The decision apparently did not sit well with organizers, who stripped UE of the second-place finish and elevated Ateneo to runner-up after the Blue Eagles beat Adamson in what was supposed to be the consolation game for third place.

The Red Warriors flew back to Manila on Saturday night for the flight to Taiwan on Monday. The coaching staff said the team needed to depart for Taipei on Monday in time for the opener on Tuesday.

Tanchangco said UE did everything to make the necessary arrangements in Bacolod so that they can play the championship game. UE even sought the help of the UAAP through board member Fr. Ermito De Sagun of University of Santo Tomas, for a possible rescheduling of the finals, even before the tournament started, to no avail.

“We were also willing to pay P6,000 per person for the rebooking but there were no flights available,” said Tanchanco.

UE, led by the core of the UAAP squad and some foreign players in its 'B team' including Moustaph Arafat, earned the right to play in the Asian University Men’s Championship from October 30 to November 4 after claiming the 9th Asian University Basketball Championships held in Manila in late September.

The Recto-based squad clinched a spot in the UniGames title game when it stunned defending champion Ateneo, 68-65, in the semifinal round.

UE won in OT .. vs Baste..

Btw, it's a happy problem hehe.

Ok si Arafat sa depensa, masipag. Hahabulin nya talaga yung bola para matapal. Mas athetic din sya kesa kay Mammie.

Yup si Mammie yung malaki ang katawan.

Si Olivares dapat kasama na sa line-up this season kaya lang nainjured eh. Isa pang scorer yun.

Ang tatangkad ng lineup ng Korea hehe

Goodluck sa Warriors, dun masusubukan ang lakas nila.

Makikita natin kung kaya nilang maglaro kalaban ang matatangkad ng walang import.

Ok na training sa team yan. Lufet mo talaga Coach Boyzie!

12 lang yung nakaline-up sa Taiwan. Ang UAAP 16 ang allowed sa lineup.

So may 4 pang slots, ang sigurado dyan ay sina Casajeros at Mammie. 2 lang ang pg sa lineup sa Taiwan.

Si Casajeros pwede mag pg. S0 3 na pg natin.

May slot pa para kay Olivarez, Valdez, Jumao-as or Bonleon.

Warriors outsteady Stags to rule Fr. Martin Cup

By Reuben Terrado
October 30, 2012, 11:12 am

UNIVERSITY of the East edged San Sebastian College in overtime, 77-72, to capture the Fr. Martin Cup Division II title on Monday at the Trinity University of Asia Gym.

Cameroonian import Charles Mammie had 22 points while Ralph Olivarez chipped in 17 including timely baskets in the extra period to help the Warriors rule the event featuring the second teams or “Team B” of different schools.

The Red Warriors, who missed the UAAP postseason, have won their second title after their conquest in the Asian University Basketball Championships held at the same venue earlier this month.

“Credit goes to all the players,” said UE assistant coach Bai Cristobal, who took over the Warriors’ Division II squad while head mentor Boyzie Zamar is with the Warriors’ main team in Taiwan to participate in the Asian University Men’s Championships.

The Red Warriors staved off a big comeback by the Stags, who recovered from a double digit deficit to force overtime.

Jaymar Perez had a game-high 24 points and scored a tip-in with 17 seconds left in regulation to cap a 6-0 run and send the game into overtime.

But the Red Warriors finished the game with a 10-2 run, with Olivarez tipping home a missed attempt with 16.6 seconds left in overtime for a 75-72 lead. Olivarez hit two free throws after a San Sebastian turnover to clinch the game.

Leo Devera had 18 points for the Stags, who started overtime with a 70-67 lead but failed to keep their momentum coming back from a 39-49 deficit entering the fourth.

In the high school division final, Hope Christian School beat Chiang Kai Shek, 68-60.

wala na yata si Bj Zosa. Gusto ko pa naman yu. Kasi shooter.Maliit nga lang at mabagal.

Baka binibigyan lang ng exposure si Flores. Wala din si Galanza dyan sa photo. Malakas tayo on paper. Sana matranslate nila sa UAAP.

Sana madevelop ni Coach Boyzie si Galanza at Olayon. These two can be our 1-2 punch with Sumang at the helm.

UE official says sorry for
UniGames final snub By Reuben Terrado October 30, 2012, 05:08 pm UNIVERSITY of the East has
apologized to University Games
organizers for skip the men’s
basketball finals in Bacolod City
last weekend in favor of the
Asian collegiate tournament in Taiwan this week. In a letter to Unigames president
Roger Banzuela, UE team
manager Jesus Tanchanco made
the apology while explaining the
circumstances behind the team's
decision to forfeit the finals against National University. He
said the Warriors needed to fulfill
a commitment to play in the
Asian University Basketball
Championships. “It is with much regret that we
had to leave the UniGames
sooner than anticipated last
Saturday night and thus miss on
our shot at the finals the next
day,” Tanchanco wrote. “This is due to our earlier commitment
to the Asian University
Basketball Federation (AUBF) to
represent not just UE but the
entire country in the Asia-wide
AUBF tournament this end of October up to early November in
Taipei. “We are also representing the
Philippines and Southeast Asia in
the AUBF this week in the wake
of the UE Red Warriors’ winning
of the championship at last
September’s Southeast Asian leg of the ongoing 9th AUBF
tournament.” Tanchanco reiterated that they
tried to find a workable solution
so that they can play in the
championship game against
National University. “We were likewise more than
willing to pay for the possible
penalties to be incurred with the
airlines for the rebooking of our
flights to Taipei and the
possibility of flying out from Bacolod or Iloilo instead of Manila,
but such options were simply
unavailable. There were also no
available seats among listed
flights to Taipei this past
weekend,” Tanchanco said. He also added that UE made
several attempts to reach out
to UniGames officials in hopes of
resolving the matter. “But we were unable to connect
with anyone among the
organizers, who were
presumably busy overseeing the
orderly conduct of the
remainder of the tournament,” said Tanchanco. The UE team manager also
thanked the UniGames organizers
for inviting the Red Warriors
despite missing the Final Four of
the recent UAAP wars. "We had to make the difficult
decision of forfeiting our chances
at a UniGames title in favor of
proverbially carrying the
Philippine flag as we compete
against the respective national teams of China, Chinese Taipei,
Hong Kong, Japan, Mongolia and
South Korea this week. We
apologize for this inadvertent
turn of events to you and to
everyone who may have felt let down in the process,” Tanchanco
said. Tanchanco also hopes that UE will
still be invited in the next
UniGames basketball tournament
despite the incident.
