Lady Maroons rule UAAP table tennis
Sid Manalo, InterAKTV · Friday, October 7, 2011 · 2:54 pm

University of the Philippines finally ended 11 years of frustration by winning the women’s table tennis crown in UAAP Season 74 after beating De La Salle in their knockout duel at the Blue Eagle Gym Thursday.

The Lady Maroons leaned on rookie Rowena Morales’s 11-8, 14-12, 11-6 victory over Michaella Yagin in the deciding singles to top the best-of-three championship series, 3-2.

“It’s very sweet. It has been a great uphill climb for us. Finally, we made it after a decade,” said Oscar Santelices, UP’s coach for the last 16 years.

University of the East, meanwhile, retained the juniors crown after the Junior Warriors nipped the National University Bullpups, 3-2, also in Game Three of their own championship series.

The Lady Archers clinched the first two singles behind Season 74 Rookie of the Year Ian Lariba and Kimberly Medina, but UP rode Most Valuable Player Bea Magpantay and Chesa Lozado in the doubles and Pearl Baldo in the other singles to frustrate the Taft-based tablenetters.

Magpantay and Lozado beat Darianne Talento and Jelly Yanera, 8-11, 11-7, 13-11, 11-7, and Baldo downed Galera, 11-9, 11-9, 8-11, 9-11, 11-3, in the third singles to force the deciding singles.

“Lahat ng pinaghirapan namin sa training nagbunga. It’s all determination and hardwork,” said Magpantay.

The women’s table tennis crown is the second title for UP this season. The Lady Maroons also won swimming for the third straight year.

The Junior Warriors also followed up their success in girls’ swimming with their title victory in table tennis.

Donna Mae Gamilla beat Koby Cabrido, 11-8, 11-8, 6-11, 11-7, in the deciding singles to settle the issue in the Junior Warriors’ favor.

UE’s Lyr Eden Leyva was named juniors MVP, while NU’s Kerbie Sta. Ana was declared Rookie of the Year..

Because of a conflict in schedule, the men’s finals Game One between defending champion University of Santo Tomas and Far Eastern University was not played Thursday.

Yung two-time Girls' Swimming MVP from UE Highschool na si Ingrid Ilustre nasa DLSU College Team pala lumipat. Tsk.

Pati yung many time Girls' Volleyball MVP from UE Highschool na si Sumang eh nasa DLSU.

Tsk tsk.

Rookie jitters? That was not the case for University of the East’s Clifferson Scott Romuar as he defied the pressure to deliver the performance of his life to give the Red Warriors the UAAP Season 76 juniors’ taekwondo championship Wednesday at the San Juan Arena.

With the score tied at two fights apiece and just 13 seconds left in the clock, Romuar connected with a body shot against his FEU foe to escape with a 5-4 decision, securing the top podium finish for the jins from Recto.

“Eto na siguro yung pinakamasayang araw ng buhay ko sa pagko-coach ng taekwondo!,” said UE coach Jeffrey Figueroa. “Masyadong nalaglag yung puso ko sa laban. Di talaga ako makapaniwala!”

Romuar, also hailed as this season’s Rookie of the Year, said, “Sobrang overwhelmed ako sa pagkakapanalo namin.”

“Siya talaga yung hero namin. With the score tied tapos super close pa ng laban nya, di talaga nya binitawan yung panalo,” Figueroa said of his star rookie.

After being bridesmaids to UST last season, the Red Warriors swept all of its four series to earn gold. Far Eastern University ended up as the first runner-up with a 3-1 card, while last year’s titlists University of Santo Tomas finished as the second runner-up with a 2-2 record in the one-day event.

King Philip Pineda was named as the juniors’ Most Valuable Player after going undefeated in his four fights for UE. “Sobrang saya namin kasi first time naming mag-champion since we joined in 2008. Tiwala lang talaga sa coaches at teammates namin,” he said.

UE ahead in battle for juniors general championship

 • From: From the wires

 • October 24, 2013, 06:05 pm

UNIVERSITY of the East, boosted by victories in taekwondo, table tennis and girls swimming, took the first-semester lead in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 76 juniors general championship race.
The Junior Warriors amassed 67 points to set the pace, with defending champion University of Santo Tomas and Ateneo joint second with 56 points each.
The Tiger Cubs have not won any title in the first semester but were second placers in girls swimming, and third in boys swimming, table tennis, taekwondo and judo. The Blue Eaglets, on the other hand, won boys swimming and judo and claimed a runner-up finish in basketball.
La Salle-Zobel is in fourth place with 54 points, followed by National University (27), Far Eastern University-Diliman (22), University of the Philippines Integrated School (18) and Adamson University (7).
The Junior Archers took second place finishes in swimming and judo, while the Bullpups, who participated in only two events, regained the basketball crown and secured a runner-up trophy in table tennis. The Baby Tamaraws wound up second in taekwondo and was third in basketball.
A championship is worth 15 points, second place 12, third 10 points, fourth eighth points, fifth six points, sixth four points, seventh two points and eighth one point.

Sana maulit ulit na magchampion ang highschool. Tapos pipiratahin lang. Tsk.

Parang mas maganda na ilagay yung OVER ALL CHAMPIONS instead of GENERAL CHAMPIONS.

Any of the two will do. hehehe!

According kasi sa spin.ph na-retain nila e.. so hindi pala Over all Champ ang Juniors last season? hmmm

ADAMSON University rolls down the curtain on the UAAP’s 76th edition on Wednesday with La Salle set to claim the trophy as overall seniors champion for the second straight year and University of the East retaining the juniors general championship.

The ceremony, to be highlighted by the awarding of the Athlete of the Year trophy as well as the recognition of UAAP athletes who shone in local and international competitions, starts at 5 p.m. at the Century Park Hotel’s Grand Ballroom.

The season saw two young teams exceed expectations, with the La Salle Green Archers rising to the top in first semester centrepiece men’s basketball and Ateneo’s Lady Eagles claiming the title in second semester showpiece women’s volleyball.

“It was indeed a very significant season that saw student-athletes exceeding their limits only to show their love for their respective schools but also for sports,” said UAAP Season 76 President Fr. Maximino Rendon, C.M., of Adamson University.

“We as season hosts are extending our heartfelt gratitude to all the member universities and the men and women and boys and girls — athletes, coaches, supporters, fans and alumni — who again helped make the UAAP the most prestigious league in the country,” Rendon added.

UE retained the juniors division title with 139 points, beating perennial winner University of Santo Tomas (121) and Ateneo (108) on account of the Junior Warriors’ conquests in seven events — athletics, table tennis, taekwondo, boys’ volleyball and girls’s swimming and a sweep in fencing.

Rounding out the juniors standings are De La Salle Zobel (102), Far Eastern University-FERN (67), National University (66), Adamson University (31) and University of the Philippines (40).

The ceremony will be capped by the turnover ceremony from Rendon to Season 77 President Carmelita Mateo of UE.

@meteorcatcher, good luck and God bless sa BAR Exams!

-------

Nanalo sa game 1 ang UE Boys Volleyball team natin against the Blue Eaglets, (3-2).

One more win and they will be completing a rare 11-peat in the Juniors' Volleyball Tournament.

The game 2 of the finals will be on monday, 12pm at the Adamson Gym.

May konti tayong video highlights sa UE Red Tribe Fan page.

It's sad to hear na walang transpo service ang team kanina at kahit tubig wala.

Mas nakakalungkot isipin, 9 ang graduating players but only 2 will stay in Lualhati's arm for college.

Si Ingrid Ilustre, na 2-time mvp nung hs at at former uaap athlete of the year sa dlsu naglaro nung college..

Si Giza Yumang na back to back mvp sa girls' volleyball sa csb naglaro..

Si Donna Gamilla na recent na nagchampion sa Table Tennis as a green archer..

at marami pa na lumipat sa san beda, dlsu at nu..

kakalungkot...
