I was able to watch the latter half of the game against Letran earlier.

Nothing to be interested about this tournament as far our team is concerned. It's not the UAAP lineup.

Jeremy Woodward did not play. Duncil has moves same with Valdez. Valdez though is still raw physically.

Ivan Hernandez and Chris Javier have bulked-up and improved a lot.

Bong Galanza is slowly developing a go-to-guy game. Got hops, skills and a good 3-point shooter. A player to watch for if he is included in the upcoming UAAP Season.

Roi Sumang still needs to improve on his shooting and his decision-making skills. Lots of turnovers still.

Coach Jerry replaced players every 2-3 minutes. No defensive stance whatsoever or a very minimal defense to say the least from the guys. He even used a 4-guards/1-center line-up at one moment during the 3rd quarter.

Letran 64, UE 56

After trailing UE in the 1st quarter, 10-16, the Knights took the driver’s seat at the end of the 1st half, 26-24. Then Letran took control of the ball game with a 12-point lead to close the 3rd quarter, 51-39. Kevin Alas led all scorers with 17-points. Kevin Racal and Jam Cortes contributed 12 and 11-points respectively for the Knights. Former Letran Squires, Roy Sumang had 12-points to lead UE follwed by Chris Javier and Pedrito Galanza with 8-points each.

Letran had excellent production from its long and midrange game with 29% from the 3-pt area(17% for UE) and 45% from the 2-pt. Range with only 36% for UE. UE out-rebounded Letran 53-36. The Red Warriors also had 9 2nd chance points with no production for the Knights on that department.

FilOil: Warriors prevail against Cardinals in OT

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Two new stars emerged from two rebuilding teams when the Mapua Institute of Technology Cardinals made a late comeback on Monday against the University of the East Red Warriors. Ultimately however, UE was able to escape overtime with an 86-82 victory, in the FilOil Flying V Pre-season Tournament at the Arena in San Juan.

Facing an 11-point hole in the third quarter, the Cardinals swooped back into the game with an 16-4 run that bridged the final two periods and gave them a brief 64-63 lead, with Gab Banal and Andrew Estrella scoring nine of those points in the final period.

Later on though, UE struck back with Chris Javier scoring on consecutive outings, followed by JM Noble notching back-to-back three-pointers to retake a 73-69 advantage with 3:30 left to play. But UE would only score three points until the end of regulation as the Banal-Estrella tandem scored six of Mapua's last seven to force overtime, with Estrella scoring 11 of his 16 points in the fourth.

In the extra five minutes, the Cardinals seemed gassed, and couldn't sustain their performance, as they were frustrated by UE's perimeter defense. UE forward Pedrito Gallanza scored all his five points in the period to push his side ahead by a score, 81- 79 for the Warriors.

UE set the score in stone on a twisting layup by Sumang, with 13 seconds to go. The Cardinals were simply unable to recover from that dagger, and the game was over, bar the shouting, when the former Green Archer tried to answer with his own drive, only to get blocked in the lane.

Banal, who is also a former member of the Philippine National Under-18 squad under Franz Pumaren, registered 17 points and 15 rebounds for the Cardinals, to lead four players in double digits. But while Mapua found its mark from inside, making 24-of-44 two-pointers, their outside shooting was an abysmal 5-of-30, with Banal, Estrella, and last season's NCAA Rookie of the Year Josan Nimes going a combined 4-of-24.

It was in the first half that Mapua dug itself in a hole. With Fil-Palestinian Yousef Taha sitting this game out due to illness, the Cardinals struggled to find offensive cohesion early in the game. In the first half, they coughed up the ball 18 times and made only 10 of their 28 field goal attempts.

The Warriors, showing much better form than their last outing against Colegio de San Juan de Letran, forced a transition game with 21 points off turnovers in the first half alone. Unfortunately for them, Mapua's defense came into play in the second half and into overtime, allowing just two more turnover points for the rest of the game.

UE's Roi Sumang continued to star for head coach Jerry Codinera. The former Letran Squire had a game-high 21 points and nine assists, while also throwing in four rebounds, four steals and two blocks for good measure. JM Noble rang in 16 markers, while big man Chris Javier posted a double-double, 15 points and 11 boards, manning the paint for UE.

The Red Warriors evened their record at 1-1 in Group A play, while Mapua started its campaign with a loss. - AMD, GMA News

The scores:

UE 86: Sumang 21, Noble 16, Javier 15, Santos 6, De Leon 6, Gallanza 5, Villarias 5, Duran 3, Hernandez 2, Sumido 2, Valdez 0, Casajeros 0, Belleza 0, Flores 0, Razon 0

MIT 82: G. Banal 17, Estrella 16, Nimes 13, Brana 12, Ighalo 6, Saitanan 5, Eriobu 5, Chien 5, J. Banal 3, Abad 0, Stevens 0

Quarter scores: 22-15, 48-32, 61-54, 76-76, 86-82

Malakas yung 2 import ng Beda. Hayaan natin, until 2013 na lang allowed ang mga imports sa NCAA.

Magiging pantay na ulit ang laban. Pag nawala import nila tayo naman magkakaimport. Haha!

FilOil: Red Warriors take advantage of Archers' late miscues

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

After the referee awarded three straight technical fouls to the entire UE team – save for their five in the court – La Salle had all the ingredients for a comeback. DLSU guard Almond Vosotros had just propelled the team to within two points of UE’s lead, whistles had been blown, and tempers were flared.

De La Salle got possession of the ball, but lost it after a traveling violation.

It was that kind of a night for the young, rebuilding Green Archers, as the University of the East Red Warriors took advantage of DLSU’s lapses on defense, to win by two points, 67-65, after De La Salle crumbled in the last two minutes of their FilOil Flying V Pre-season Tournament game, Saturday at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Vosotros caught fire in the fourth quarter, hitting three straight triples to give his Archers a 55-52 edge over the mercurial Red Warriors. A lay-in by former De La Salle Zobel standout Joshua Webb and a three by Cebu stalwart Mark Tallo then widened the distance further to six points, 60-54.

The Red Warriors pushed in the dying minutes, taking advantage of De La Salle’s mistakes. After being allowed a speck of daylight, BJ Zosa launched a three, followed by a pair of free throws from Chris Javier, and a split by Roi Sumang to close them in at 65-64.

After some sloppy passing, UE swingman Ian Valdez stole the ball from Luigi De La Paz and dished the ball to Gene Belleza to convert two easy points.

Forward Adrian Santos punctuated the moment by stealing the ball on the ensuing inbounds play, drew the foul, and split his free throws to give UE the edge, 67-65. Still with a chance to force overtime or win outright, La Salle missed their look at the buzzer, allowing Sumang and his teammates to celebrate their furious comeback.

La Salle was down big by halftime, 34-24, which led to the veteran Webb gathering his teammates in a huddle, giving his younger teammates the pep talk. The Green Archers then entered the second half playing in high spirits, outscoring their opponents 22-14 in the third quarter.

Unfortunately for them, some sloppy play late and a fever that limited bluechip rookie Jeron Teng to seven minutes ultimately did them in.

The Green Archers committed five less turnovers, scored more second chance points (10-5), scored more off turnovers (30-5), and converted a high percentage of their threes (7-18), but it was their unnecessary fouls that eased UE into the game, as the Red Warriors converted 23 out of 33 from the charity stripe. Sumang was the biggest beneficiary of DLSU’s unnecessary fouls, making nine out of possible 12 attempts.

La Salle, by contrast, was just 8-of-14 from the line.

Sophomore floor general Sumang led all Red Warriors in scoring with 13 points, one of four Red Warriors who finished in double-digit scoring. Jay-ar Sumido added 12, while UE big men Chris Javier and Adrian Santos each added 11 points and four boards.

With Teng sidelined, Almond Vosotros took over the scoring chores, top-scoring in the game with 25 markers, thanks to 5-of-8 shooting from downtown, 10-of-18 overall. Mark Tallo came in next with nine points, but turned the ball over five times, while big man Norbert Torres was held to just three points due to foul trouble.

The win gave the Red Warriors their second win in five games, while the loss sent La Salle to 3-2, in a tie in Group A with the Letran Knights. - AMD, GMA News

The scores:

UE – Sumang 13, Sumido 12, Javier 11, Santos 11, Zosa 7, Duran 4, Belleza 4, Razon 4, Galanza 1, Duncil 0, Villarias 0, Valdez 0, Hernandez 0, Flores 0, Woodward 0, Alberto 0

DLSU – Vosotros 25, Tallo 9, Webb 8, Dela Paz 7, Teng 5, Mendoza 4, Torres 3, Manguera 2, Herrera 2, Gotladera 0, Tampus 0, Paredes 0, G. Reyes 0, M. Reyes 0, Andrada 0

Quarter scoring: 14-10, 24-34, 48-46, 67-65

Mukang magaling yung sinasabing recruit natin from England na si Kyifer Del Mundo, MVP sa England U-18.

Kung ang ADMU may Kiefer tayo may Kyifer! Haha!

The 2011 EBL Junior Final Fours took place this past weekend, with the top four teams in the U14, U16 and U18 age groups fighting it out for the right to be called National Champions. See below for full results, leading scorers plus a few notes:

Under 18 EBL Junior Final Fours

Worthing Thunder came up clutch to win the 2011 Under 18 National Championship on Sunday, defeating Cheshire Jets 83-81 on a Kyifer Del Mundo gamewinner with 8.1 seconds left.

With Cheshire up 81-80 and the clock ticking down, Worthing’s Del Mundo penetrated into the lane, took the contact and made the basket and-1. He calmly hit the free throw, putting Worthing up by 2, 83-81 with 8 seconds left; Cheshire’s 3 point gamewinning attempt hit the back of the rim and the celebrations ensued. Watch video of the last 1 minute and 20 seconds of the game here.

Del Mundo was named MVP, finishing with 13 points and 9 rebounds, whilst Luke Nelson led all Worthing scorers with 18 points. Greg Krippa had 20 points to lead Cheshire, whilst Niel Gillard and Mike Hinchcliffe had 16 points a peice with the latter adding 12 rebounds.
